ObjectivesI

Web-based Information Systems (WIS) are used for processing and diffusing a large amount of information over the Internet. Taking advantage of the underlying Web infrastructure, WIS manage multimedia information organised in a hypermedia structure. In this context, metadata can play two roles in WIS. On the one hand, metadata are used to describe and identify the various types of media information (text, image, audio, video) that compose the Web pages of a WIS. The underlying models are, in this case, built and exploited for indexing and retrieving information. On the other hand, metadata are used to describe and identify different WIS user profiles. The underlying models are here built and exploited for adaptability purposes so that both the content and the presentation of the WIS multimedia information are adapted to the user's needs and preferences, according to her/his level of knowledge, center of interest, available time, material configuration, and so on.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers interested in the elicitation, synthesis and extraction of metadata models for querying or/and adapting WIS. The emphasis will be put on the use of semi-structured formalisms (especially, the MPEG-7 standard) for the description of such metadata but also in the need and use of more declarative formalisms, and more specifically in the relevance of the object-oriented formalism for expressing and processing such metadata.

The scope of the workshop includes, but is not limited to:

  • MPEG-7 and multimedia information querying

  • MPEG-7 and adaptability in WIS

  • semi-structured metada models for multimedia information querying

  • semi-structured metada models for adaptability in WIS

  • metadata and adaptability in WIS applications: e-learning, GIS...

  • structured and object-oriented metada models for multimedia information querying

  • structured and object-oriented metada models for adaptability in WIS

  • metadata models for querying Web services

  • metadata models for adapting Web services

Participation

Authors are invinted to submit either a short position paper (5-10 pages), or a discussion topic proposal (1-2 pages). Submitted position papers and discussion topics will be reviewed by the program comitee.

Selected papers will be published in OOIS 2003 Workshop Proceedings and will be presented during the workshop.
